Lando Norris edged out fellow driver and title rival the Australian for the quickest lap in the final moments of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who seized the championship lead from his teammate by one point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix a fortnight back, outpaced the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair during the running before sprint qualifying scheduled for the evening session. Max Verstappen, the other racer in the points battle, sitting 36 points behind Norris, finished in 17th position as his Red Bull team opted for a different programme. His teammate the Japanese driver was the only driver to crash, though minor, when he lost control at Turn Four during the early running. The Japanese spun out over the track edges before spinning across the run-off area, and was fortunate to avoid just a slight brush of the fence. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also had a spin, at the very end of the session, spinning around through the fast downhill Mergulho corner leading to the final corner on to the start-finish straight. Hamilton ended the session in 19th place, one place behind teammate Charles Leclerc. Norris and Piastri were far ahead of the other competitors, with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber in third, over half a second off Piastri's best. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was in fourth, with the Sauber of Bortoleto fifth from the Mercedes of George Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
