British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," he commented. "Including them were thousands of British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
